HEC-RAS is a software designed to perform hydraulic 1D and 2D calculations on river channels either natural or man constructed. It allows steady flow, unsteady flow, sediment transport and water quality modelling. It is developed by the US army corps of engineers, US Department of defence and it is openly available software. The HEC-RAS steady flow is based on one dimensional energy equation, while for the unsteady flow, HEC-RAS uses an implicit, finite difference method to solve the fully dynamic Saint-Venant equations.

The objective of HEC-RAS is to solve river dynamics and river engineering problems. Applications are delimitation of flood areas, embankment and protection work design, river restoration, emergency plans for dam break, optimization of hydraulic work and risk assessment and management.

Objectives:

  • The students get familiar with Hec-Ras Interface,
  • The students understand the Software’s tools and functioning,
  • To simulate different inflow case scenarios and
  • To simulate river dynamics and understand the interaction with hydraulic structures.

Installation HEC-RAS

Session 1 – Introduction to HEC-RAS

This session cover the installation, presenting the Software capabilities, importing the River Geometry to Hec-Ras, entering Flow Data details and use of Boundary Conditions.

Session 02 – Creation of a basic river model

In this session we learn about how to enter geometry information of the cross sections of the river and create a river confluence, hydraulic calculations and representing a river model where there exists a river confluence and steady water depth profiles for the different flow scenarios entered.

Session 03: Hydraulic modeling with a hydraulic structure (Culvert)

In this session we realize a hydraulic model adding a hydraulic structure (culvert) to the river system. Also, we enter geometry information of the cross sections of the river and perform a steady flow analysis.

Session 04: Hydraulic modeling with a hydraulic structure (Reservoir and Bridge)

In this session we make a hydraulic modeling with reservoir structure and hydraulic modeling with bridge structure.

Session 05: Developing a flooding model in 2D and Modeling a channel from a DEM

In this session we develop 2 models. First we develop a flooding model in 2D (two-dimension) using the most recent capability of Hec-Ras that cover analysis of Satellite data information, use of the Ras Mapper application for the visualization of the 2D simulation results and analysis of the flow conditions. The second model cover the modeling a channel from a DEM and exporting results to any GIS software.

Session 06: Sediment analysis and Creating a flood hazard map

In this session we realize a sediment analysis that cover the geometry preparation, entering quasi unsteady flow data (sediment), setting initial condition and transport parameters and running and analyzing sediment transport. Also, we create a a flood hazard map using the Raster Calculator function on HecRas.
